The opportunity to create a better, fairer and more prosperous Scotland is too good to miss, Yes Scotland Chief Executive Blair Jenkins said today.
And he said the new Scotland will be built on the “phenomenal wave of optimism, confidence and energy” that has been released during the independence debate.
Taking time out from his hectic campaigning schedule to lend a hand with the deluge of people flooding into the Yes Scotland shop on Glasgow’s Hope Street, Mr Jenkins said Thursday’s historic vote will open the door to a bright new future for all who live and work here.
He said: “Scotland is one of the top 20 wealthiest nations on the planet and with such a strong financial foundation we can choose independence with confidence.
“Where we go from there will be up to us as a nation and that is an incredible opportunity. Whether people have voted Yes or No, after the decision to become independent has been taken, the whole of Scottish society will come together to build our future. That is exciting. That is energizing.
“The opportunity of independence is to always get the government we vote for. We can use control of Scotland’s great resources to deliver real gains for the people living here, building a fairer and more prosperous country. We can make sure Scotland’s vast wealth works much better for the people who live here.
“These are powerful ideas for Scotland to unite behind after a Yes vote. I have no doubt that all those who have participated in this debate, and been part of the energy and excitement, will come together with the same passion and determination to do what is best for our country.
“We can be proud of the referendum, which has seen a flourishing of Scotland’s self-confidence as a nation.
“We should welcome the fact that people have different views and that the debate has encouraged people to express these.
“We’ve had all these strengths – resources, talent, wealth – but the referendum has given us something additional: a new energy, confidence and determination, a flowering of engagement from all sides, that will serve us very well in the early days as an independent nation. Scotland will move forward together after a Yes vote.
“We’ve absolutely got what it takes to prosper as an independent country – that’s why we need to take this opportunity, or we’ll regret it for decades to come. Indeed, it’s possible we’ll never have this chance to take control of our own future again.
“I look forward to a Scotland united in building a fairer and more prosperous future and that’s why I can say with confidence to people across Scotland – let’s do this.”
Mr Jenkins was assisted in the shop by actress Libby McArthur, a dedicated Yes supporter, who said: “We have to grab this one opportunity we have with both hands. Devolution has been good for Scotland but independence will be even better. We’ll be able to connect the wealth of Scotland with the priorities of the people of Scotland. That means investing in jobs and our future, not wasting £600 million on things like nuclear weapons or the House of Lords.
“Scotland is one of the wealthiest nations in the world and that tells us we can choose independence with confidence. Independence won’t be a magic wand, but it is the necessary first step if we are to make Scotland the sort of country we all know it can be.
“We’ll have all the powers we need to ensure Westminster’s health privatisation agenda can’t damage our NHS. And we’ll be able to use the full powers of a Yes to create job opportunities for young people in Scotland, enabling them to build careers and families close to home.
“A Yes is a once in a lifetime opportunity to protect the things that matter most to people in Scotland. We can have Scotland that works for the many, rather than a Westminster system that only works for the few. So, let’s do this.”
